"Farmers markets bring us together like a chef blending ingredients into a masterpiece that nourishes both body and community."
-Tristan Dixon, Deck Sales Manager
It's National Farmers Market Week, so let's take a moment to appreciate the farmers markets that Deck Family Farm calls home. We love the community and energy we find at markets!
“Farmers markets are vibrant, exciting, and welcoming places to be," said Sales Manager Tristan Dixon. "When they come alive, I feel the warmth of every greeting and smell the aromas of fresh bounty."
Our Lead Farmers Market Rep. Stephanie Sook enjoys the people most. "Whether it be the same friendly faces each week or the family from out of town or the person experiencing their first farmers market, every interaction with my amazing customers is unique and appreciated."
We are present at 8 markets during the year and right now we are in the high season when every market is open. Early every weekend morning, we have trucks going north and south from the farm bringing meat and eggs to 7 different markets in Portland and one in Eugene. It is a huge production with many moving parts!
On top of that, the Saturday markets at PSU, Hollywood and St. John's are also CSA dropsites where members collect their orders.
On Thursdays our team takes inventory of the market display freezers, rotates the inventory and fills up the stock. Thursdays are also for packing the CSA frozen meat orders to load into coolers and deliver to the markets and dropsites.
Then on Fridays we pack the rest of the CSA orders. This involves picking up fresh products from our partner vendors and putting out all the Grazier's Garden and Creamy Cow orders.
Once all the CSA items are loaded into totes and coolers and the market freezers are packed, we carefully load the trucks. Each truck delivers to multiple locations so the items must be packed in an order that allows efficient unpacking at the markets.
Then, the trucks get to Portland and meet up with the booth reps who set up the booths. The reps are people who themselves have fallen in love with the vibe of farmers markets and found a job that allows them to become a big part of it.
And it's all worth it. The markets represent a significant portion of our business, along with CSA and wholesale.
